When I was a child young enough to know no better. I use to hear the adults saying “Christmas is right around the corner”, as children in the neighborhood we would run to the corner of our street and our disappointment Christmas was not there.
We didn’t know what Christmas was all about. We were not pondering “What is the true meaning of Christmas?”. To us Christmas meant two weeks out of school, more toys, a Grand market, a Church Service on Christmas morning, and a feast throughout the day.
Christmas is a celebration that first took place in Rome in the year 336. This is a commemoration of the Birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Jesus was born of a virgin, took on flesh, to give us a chance of redemption. No one knows the specific day, month, or year. However, the most important part is that he was born.
Over the years, Christmas has lost it’s true meaning. This sacred holiday is now monetized. It is used as a marketing tool to convince people to buy things they don’t need or can’t afford. It is now more about the character Santa Claus.
Christmas should be about Christ, family, and giving of our time and gifts to the lesser fortunate. I believe this is a great way to honor Christ. Due to Covid-19, Christmas will be a lot different this year. Whether it is the limited cash to splurge or the absence of some relatives at the usual family gatherings.
However, Christmas being different this year doesn’t have to be a bad thing. We can use the time to reflect on the real reason for the season. It’s time to abandon all those Christmas traditions that don’t honor Christ.
